Westfield NJ History
Westfield NJ has roots as part of Elizabethtown when it was settled in 1664. ‘West fields' was known as an area west of the Cranford River.
Many disputes over this land's ownership arose over the years between the East Jersey Proprietors and the Elizabethtown Associates. These conflicts became more frequent and more heated after "the Clinker Lot Division," in which the Associates laid out the area in 171 one-hundred-acre lots.
The disputes were complicated by certain land transactions of 1684 following a survey of the western bounds of Elizabethtown ordered by Governor Gawen Lawrie. The survey was led by Captain John Baker, the Indian interpreter, who later was "slapped on the wrist" by a court for his role in the questionable proceedings. With little documentary support, the so-called "Baker Tract" has sometimes been referred to as the beginning of Westfield. In 1794 the town of Westfield was formed as a separate municipality in Union County.
Life In Westfield NJ
According to the 2000 census, 29,544 people currently reside in Westfield. A vibrant and unique Downtown is the heart and soul of the community with numerous local and national retailers. The Downtown Westfield Corporation (DWC) manages the downtown area's growth and enhancement. The DWC is a National Main Street program associated with the National Trust for Historic Preservation. In 2004, Westfield won the Great American Main Street Award from the National Trust.
Easy bus and train service into New York makes Westfield an ideal community for commuters looking for a family-oriented town with a strong sense of community.
The TV show ‘Ed' was partially filmed in Westfield's downtown, which served as the basis for Stuckeyville's downtown. ‘The Perfect Holiday', a movie starring Queen Latifah was also partially filmed here.
Westfield NJ Schools
Westfield, NJ is well-known for its excellent Public School System. Over 90% of recent graduates of Westfield High School continue their education with over 80% entering four-year colleges.
The district has six K - 5 elementary schools and two grade 6 - 8 middle schools. Schools on the north side of town are Franklin Elementary School, Washington Elementary School, Wilson Elementary School, and Theodore Roosevelt Intermediate School.
Schools on the south side are Jefferson Elementary School, McKinley Elementary School, Tamaques Elementary School, and Thomas Alva Edison Intermediate School. Thomas Alva Edison Intermediate School is noted for its excellence in academics, activities, and the arts.
All students then attend Westfield High School.
